We have all been told to drink our milk for strong healthy bones, but do you know if the milk your drinking has the vitamins essential for bone health? I'm going to talk share some things that I'm sure you aren't even aware of that could be harming your overall health. Many "low fat" "skim" milks no longer contain Vitamin D, the process to make them strips them of this and many other essential nutrients. SKIM MILK: Skim milk is stripped of vitamins D, E, K and denatured. It is a by-product that was once solely fed to hogs. Dry milk is usually dried at high temperatures which reduces or destroys the vitamin, decreases the fatty acids and makes minerals indigestible. The nutritional value of skim milk is altered by synthetic or fish oil vitamins commonly contaminated by salmonella. Canned evaporated milk contains non-nutritional corn syrup and / or white sugar, SYNTHETIC VITAMIN, CALCIUM CHLORIDE, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, and SODIUM CITRATE which are all dangerous to your health. Skim, dry, evaporated and imitation milk are unsafe for children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women, the poor and the elderly. Petroleum wax in milk (and other waxed containers) has cancer causing hydrocarbons in them which the FDA acknowledges but allows their use. It is known that in ancient Africa fig juice was used as a substitute for human milk. Figs are similar in chemical composition to human milk. It can double the size of an infant in six months. When combined with dates, figs were used to sustain the life of many desert African tribes. Dates were later used by the romans as food for training warriors and building muscles. So hopefully you'll think twice the next time you're in the grocery store going to reach for that gallon of "skim milk" - at least I sure hope you do! If you must using 2% or whole milk is your best option. Other great alternatives are Coconut and Almond milk, just make sure there is no soy in the ingredient list!

In the past few years society has been pushing for you to eat more soy because it's "healthy" for you. However, all that soy you are consuming may actually be doing you more harm than good. For the past couple of weeks this topic has sparked my interest. It all began while I was on vacation in Mexico last week reading "Chill Out & Get Healthy" by Aimee Rapp an acupuncturist in New York (Great book by the way and I highly recommend it). Now while I'm reading her book I'm thinking wow ok she's really reaffirming all of these things for me again, but I now feel like I need to do more not just for me but for my patients. So I'm sure you can guess that a portion of her book talks about the dangers of soy and as Aimee puts it "Soy Sucks" - I love her style! This got me thinking ok it's time to do some background research and get to the bottom of this. So I'm sure this will be the first of many posts I will have about soy and other foodstuffs that are harming our bodies.
I'm a huge advocate of MODERATION and soy should be eaten in moderation because it contains phytoestrogens, which act like estrogen in your body—and too much estrogen can cause some breast cancers to grow. In fact, studies show that high-dose soy supplements might up breast cancer risks. “To be safe, women with a personal or family history of breast cancer shouldn’t eat soy or take supplements,” says Katherine Lee, MD, a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic’s Breast Center. Soy may also interfere with the functioning of the thyroid gland, which controls how efficiently you burn energy. Safest ways to enjoy soy It’s OK to eat soy once a day in natural forms like edamame, and the foods below. These are fermented soy foods, which is the only way soy products should be consumed. We all have cravings of different types of foods, but did you know that everytime you get a craving for something it's your body's way of telling you that you are lacking an important vitamin or mineral?
Recently I talked about the link between chocolate cravings and magnesium deficiencies. Here is a chart that goes over different cravings and what vitamin or mineral they are linked to. I've seen a lot of people that are trying to lose weight recently and one thing that's important is recognizing those cravings and then giving the body what it really needs by eating healthy foods that contain that deficient nutrient, and will also curb the craving. Also for those with addictions, when you are craving tobacco or alcohol your body is also deficient in an important nutrient so if you're trying to quit smoking try supplementing Vitamin C or eating more nut snacks throughout the day.
